Hereford is a Cathedral city with a rich history and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Hereford is situated on the River Wye and is the county town of Herefordshire. Hereford and Herefordshire is probably most well known for its fruit and cider production as well as the Hereford cattle breed.
The name Hereford is said to be made up of two Anglo Saxon words; ‘here’ – being a body of soldiers and ‘ford’ – being a shallow river crossing. This body of soldiers would probably have occupied Hereford Castle; a castle that supposedly rivaled Windsor Castle in size. The castle was dismantled during the 18th century and the land it sat on named the Castle Green.
Hereford is also famous for being the home of the Mappa Mundi. The Mappa Mundi is a medieval map of the world, it is the largest medieval map know to be still in existence and was drawn on a piece of vellum (skin).
